What is mist system, and when is it used?
A mist cooling system can provide pleasant coolness on a patio or in a gazebo, while also keeping pesky insects at bay. On hot summer days, these benefits become particularly important.
Mist cooling is currently the only technology capable of lowering outdoor temperatures. Such systems are widely used in industry and can be found in hotels, summer cafes, and restaurants. For the average homeowner, misting provides freshness and comfort in places where a conventional air conditioner cannot be installed—such as in a gazebo, on a barbecue area, and so on.
Mist cooling lowers the air temperature by 5–15°C. How does it work? The “heart” of the system is a pump that forces water at a pressure of 70 bar (7,000 kPa) through nozzles with tiny holes, creating a cloud of droplets no larger than 10 microns. These droplets immediately begin to evaporate, and it is this process (the transition from a liquid to a gaseous state) that draws thermal energy from the air. Moreover, the drier the air, the more moisture it absorbs, and the more it cools as a result.
The system is modular, portable, and compact, so it can be installed virtually anywhere—and you can do it yourself. Using special mounting hardware, which is usually included in the kit, multiple nozzles can be easily arranged across any area, creating a uniform, effective curtain of fine water droplets. Furthermore, the market offers pump-less mist cooling kits that can be connected to a standard garden irrigation system.
In addition to the heat, summer residents are often bothered by dust, and cold mist effectively combats this problem. Tiny water droplets bind dust particles, making them heavier and causing them to fall to the ground rather than swirl around.
But that’s not all. If deodorizing agents are added to the water, the evaporative cooling system can purify the air by eliminating unpleasant odors.
And if you mix repellents into the water, mosquitoes, wasps, bees, and other annoying insects will stop bothering those relaxing outdoors. Importantly, this poses absolutely no harm to the health of people or pets.
Having covered the practical functions, let’s mention the aesthetic ones. With the help of cold mist, you can achieve various visual effects that will transform an ordinary garden plot into a fairy-tale land. Nozzles positioned at different angles create veils, spheres, clouds, and other shapes. All system components—pipes, fittings, etc.—can be buried in the ground, hidden under decking, mounted under eaves, or attached to tensioned cables.
